Welcome to our fundraising website for Avon and Somerset Search and Rescue!
This blog was created by Bath Spa University’s first year Creative Writing students to raise awareness for the charity.
Formed in 1975 and made up entirely of volunteers, the volunteer organization Avon and Somerset Search and Rescue has saved many lives in the Bath, Somerset and Bristol area. The River Avon, which runs through these cities has claimed many lives, including students at Bath and Bath Spa University.
One such incident occurred at the start of this academic year. After a night out with friends in November, a first year student at Bath Spa University was declared missing. Thanks to Search and Rescue, his body was discovered in the River Avon only a few days later.
There are over two hundred first year students on the Creative Writing course at Bath Spa University. That’s over two hundred voices coming together to help raise awareness and money for the charity. Avon and Somerset Search and Rescue is run twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week and all year round. As the organisation is not government funded, it relies solely on donations. The Creative Writing students at Bath Spa University are in the midst of organising events for the charity. These include the Open Mic Night at Juno’s Bar and Kitchen in Bath’s city center on the 28th March, and the Sponsored Fun Run on the 1st April. The Fun Run will take place at the Bath Spa University Newton Park campus. The run will stretch over 4.3km and the runners are expected to dress up for the occasion. You can keep up to date with these events by following our Facebook page.
We hope you can make it to our upcoming events! There are many more to come, so explore our website to learn more about how we aim to help.
